A New Jersey judge is fining a Bellmawr gym $130,000 for repeatedly defying state orders to stay shut.  Despite Governor Phil Murphy’s pandemic mandate ordering gyms closed months ago, Atilis Gym opened its doors in May before waging a high-profile legal campaign to keep them open, even going so far as to remove the front doors to provide gymgoers twenty-four-hour access.

Owners Ian Smith and Frank Trumbetti argued the state’s restrictions violate their First Amendment rights, saying they have maintained COVID protocols at all times.  A Trenton Superior Court Judge however upheld Governor Murphy’s ruling and ordered them to pay more than $130,000 in fines, noting that Atilis Gym could not “ignore orders with which it does not agree.”
