It wasn’t a good afternoon for WCTC-area teams in the state playoffs.
All three teams in action were eliminated on Saturday afternoon.
The most spectacular defeat was Bridgewater-Raritan, the 5th-seed in North Jersey, Section 1, Group 5. The Panthers led 20-0 at the half at 4th-seed Westfield, but gave up 27 unanswered points to the Blue Devils to lose 27-23 nd finish their season at 4-6. Bridgewater and Westfield met in three straight state sectional finals from 2015-2017 – with the Blue Devils winning all three – but the Panthers finally broke through this year in the regular season with a 17-16 win. However, Westfield won the rematch Saturday in the state playoffs.
In Central Jersey Group 1 action, 6th-seed Middlesex fell at 3rd-seed Salem 47-7. The Blue Jays finish their season 8-2 but with two straight losses, including a defeat at the hands of Bernards on Cutoff Weekend.
And in Non-Public Group 4, 7th-seed St. Joseph of Metuchen lost to 10th-seed Paramus Catholic 42-7 at home Saturday. While the Falcons were without two of its star players – WR/DB K-Shawn Schulters and QB Matt Stanton – the Paladins also were without their starting signal-caller, Dorian Newell. St. Joe’s finishes the season 8-2.
