The fifth-ranked Piscataway Chiefs pulled to within one on a late touchdown at Brenner Family Field, but were stopped on a two-point conversion that would have won it, as third-ranked St. Joseph of Metuchen pulled out a 15-14 victory in Saturday high school football action.

In other Saturday games, top-ranked Somerville suffered its first loss of the season (4-1) following a 23-16 setback at Summit.  The Pioneers got touchdowns from Jordan McNair and Tyree Hinton to take a 16-15 lead with 5:40 to go on the game, but the Hilltoppers answered with a touchdown to go up by the final margin with just two minutes left.

Beranrds rolled in Roselle to a 42-12 win over the Rams.  The Mountaineers got a kick return for a touchdown in the game following a Roselle score.

And South River faced one of the top teams in the state, Hillside, and were shutout 48-nothing on the road.  The Rams trailed 35-nothing at the half.
