The 2019 preseason Top 20 released this week by NJ.com/The Star-Ledger has what may be an unprecedented three teams from the WCTC coverage area in the Top 10.
In a state where non-public schools from North Jersey tend to dominate, having three public schools among the top ten is extraordinary.
Add in the fact that all three teams hail from the GMC White Division, and it may make that grouping of five the toughest public school division in the entire state.
Piscataway – coming off a bowl game win in 2018 – checks in at Number 5 in the NJ.com/Star-Ledger Top 20. North Brunswick – which lost to Sayreville in the 2018 Central Jersey Group 5 title game – came in 8th. Sayreville – which also won a bowl game in 2018 – came in at Number 10.
Piscataway is the highest-ranked public school in the pre-season poll.
The GMC assigned divisions this season based strictly on enrollment, which moved Piscataway down to the White Division, but it’s clearly the toughest division in the league, if not the toughest public school division in New Jersey.
The Chiefs, Raiders and Bombers are in the White, along with Edison and New Brunswick.
Rounding out the area teams in the NJ.com/Star-Ledger Top 20 was Somerville, at Number 20. The Pioneers have been to a sectional final each of the last three years after former Devils owner Geoff Vanderbeek helped orchestrate a massive turnaround in the program’s fortunes. They have faced Rumson-Fair Haven in each of the last three state finals, winning the middle matchup in 2017.
WCTC’s Mike Pavlichko will unveil his preseason Top Ten this Saturday on Football USA, which airs from 4-6:30 pm, and also will feature an in-studio appearance by Marcus Borden and Simeon Pincus of MyCentralJersey.com, to help preview the 2019 Central Jersey High School Football season. A number of coaches are scheduled to call in as well.
