The Somerville Pioneers’ undefeated season came to an end Sunday as the top-seed fell to 2nd-seed Rumson-Fair Haven 42-35 at Brooks Field.
Somerville finished 11-1, having now split the last two Central Jersey Group 3 finals with the Bulldogs. They won last year’s title game, but the Bulldogs took the rematch.
In large part, it was due to Somerville’s inability to stop Alex Maldjian. The senior runningback was nearly impossible to tackle, gaining many of his more than 200 yards on second and third efforts. He had, unofficially, 44 carries in the game, and ran for four touchdowns.
