It's Time To Gear Up For Cold Weather

Now that it's fall, it is once again time to gear up for colder weather, including making sure your heating system is ready to go. Servicing your heating system on a regular basis comes with a lot of obvious benefits--avoiding untimely breakdowns on cold winter nights and costly repair work to name a few-- but one overlooked benefit is the verification of safe and proper operation in relation to the venting of the system's flue gases.

Specifically, carbon monoxide (CO) is a byproduct of the fuel your furnace burns to heat your home. Known as a “silent killer,” CO is a colorless, odorless gas which brings about many flu-like symptoms, can cause you to pass out, and can even prove fatal with enough exposure. While infants and the sick or elderly are generally considered the most at risk to carbon monoxide poisoning, everyone is susceptible to it, especially if exposed while sleeping. CO poisoning leads to over 400 deaths and 4,000 hospitalizations annually but is largely avoidable if the proper steps are taken.

As part of your annual heating system tune-up, it is crucial that you have your system’s vent pipe and/or chimney inspected for any leaks, blockages, or defects that could cause harmful carbon monoxide to remain in your home and contaminate the air you and your family breathe. Accordingly, all safety devices in place to detect such a condition should be tested to make sure they are working properly. As a final line of defense, it is essential that you have carbon monoxide detectors installed if you don’t have them already, and test their operation every year. With all of these bases covered, you will be able to keep your home warm all heating season with the confidence that your family will be both comfortable as well as safe.
