Democrat Phil Murphy is New Jersey's Governor-Elect. Murphy handily defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno 56-42 percent in Tuesday's election. Murphy is a former ambassador and Wall Street executive. He will replace outgoing Republican Governor Chris Christie, who has been dogged by low public approval numbers for quite awhile. Christie's 14 percent approval rating was seen as a major hurdle for Guadagno. Murphy will become the first Democrat to hold the office since Jon Corzine lost his reelection bid to Chris Christie in 2009. Just a minute after the polls closed Tuesday night media outlets projected Murphy as the winner. For weeks poll numbers had indicated that Murphy held a sizable lead over his closest rival, Guadagno.
