Middlesex wins first state title since 1984

The Middlesex Blue Jays used a balanced offensive attack to win the Central Jersey Group 1 title, beating Point Pleasant Beach 33-21 at Kean University in Union.

Five different players scored touchdowns, and the fourth-seeded Blue Jays never trailed against the 7th-seeded Garnet Gulls.  Anthony Mason opened the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run with 8:34 to go in the first quarter.  The Gulls tied it up on a 2-yard TD run by QB Luke Frauenheim, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way, once Middlesex went up two scores on a 1-yard run by QB John Kressbach, and a 21-yard TD run by Josh Ramirez.  The Jays also got a 60-yard touchdown pass by Zach Godfrey and a 5-yard touchdown run by Tom Rau.

The win keeps Middlesex perfect in state finals, with a 5-0 mark all-time.  They also won titles in Central Jersey Group 1 in 1984, 1982 and 1981, getting their first crown in Central Jersey Group 2 in 1972.
