Astronomers Discover Oldest Galaxy Ever

Astronomers say a newly discovered galaxy is the oldest spiral galaxy ever seen.  Researchers at Princeton University say the galaxy is eleven-billion light years from Earth, and is an ancestor to spiral galaxies like the Milky Way.  A senior astronomer at Princeton said in a statement that spiral galaxies are exceptionally rare in the early universe, and this discovery opens the door to investigating how galaxies form.  Spiral galaxies are defined by long tentacles of gas, dust and stars that wrap around the galaxy's center.
